Family Information Service  This is a Government-funded service, where details of support for families, leisure activities, childcare and much more may be accessed for any region in Britain by submitting a postcode or area name.  Tel:  0800 783 4259.
Citizens Advice  2nd Floor, Cobourg House, 32 Mayflower Street, Plymouth, PL1 3QX. Tel: (01752) 242403 to make an appointment.  Telephone advice service available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm.  A free, independent and non-judgemental source  of  information  and advice  on  a  wide range of subjects including housing, consumer, tax and personal problems, benefits, health  and  social  services,  legal aid and local facilities.  Citizens Advice offers community legal services.  It aims to promote equal opportunities and anti-discrimination.  www.plymouthcab.org.uk
Connexions Devon and Cornwall:  Information and advice for 13 - 19 year olds.  A Government-funded local partnership of key agencies who work with young people, such as local authorities, social services, police and probation, health authorities, employment service, voluntary services, etc delivering the Connexions Service.  The Service aims to provide every young person aged 13 - 19 with the best possible information, advice, personal support and guidance to help them in their transition to successful adult and working lives.  Tel:  (01752) 207700.   Visit the website here

Day Care Trust  A site for parents to obtain information about help with childcare costs, including information on childcare provision at Universities, Colleges, TECs and LECs across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

National Drug Prevention Alliance  (NDPA)
A grouping of organisations and individuals who want to see more and better prevention operating in the UK, as part of the solution to the drug problem.
NHS DirectA 24 hour nurse-led helpline providing confidential health advice and information.  It is staffed by qualified nurses and health information advisors and can also provide information on opening hours of local pharmacies.  Calls are charged at local rate.  Tel:  0845 4647 
Naval Personal and Family Service:  Fenner Block, HMS Drake, Plymouth, PL2 2BG.  Tel: (01752) 555041  Provides professional social work, community work and support services for Royal Naval personnel and their families/dependents.  Referral by self, family or other agencies.
Overeaters Anonymous:  Meets regularly in Plymouth, Ivybridge and Tavistock to help anyone recover from eating disorders.  National helpline 0700 0784 985.
The Patient Advocacy Service offers a free and confidential advocacy service to people accessing general or mental health NHS services in Plymouth, who have concerns about their healthcare.  They offer support in dealing with any health and related social care problems.  They can help you to get your voice heard by the professionals involved in your care.  They can speak on your behalf when required.  They can provide information to help you make an informed choice.  They can help to protect your rights as an individual and refer you to other services if necessary.  For further information contact Michael Stinton-Brownbridge or Beth Davies at Plymouth Guild Patient Advocacy Service, Plymouth Guild, Ernest English House, Buckwell Street, Plymouth, PL1 2DA.  Tel: (01752) 201766.  email advocacy@plymouthguild.org.uk
 
Parentline Plus:  A UK registered charity offering support to anyone parenting a child - parents, stepparents, grandparents and foster parents.  Parentline Plus runs a freephone helpline, courses for parents, develops innovative projects and provides a range of information for parents, eg what to do if your child is suffering  from bullying, a survival guide for parents of teenagers, etc.  There are also sections on the Website for children aged 7 - 11 and 11 - 16, entitled when families change.  Parentline Plus would also welcome volunteers to assist with their work.  Tel: 0808 800 2222.
Plymouth City Council Access Consultants:  Building Control, Civic Centre, Plymouth.  Tel: (01752) 304577   Provides a source of information on all aspects relating to access for those with mobility problems, sensory impairment or other similar difficulties, including Transport, Shopping, Public Conveniences, Car Parking, Visitor Attractions, General Contacts.
Plymouth Library Services:  Links to clubs and societies and charities databases.
Plymouth & District Racial Equality Council:  Respect Suite, 2nd Floor Prideaux Court, Palace Street, Plymouth, PL1 2AY.  Tel:  (01752) 224555  Offer advice and help to black and minority ethnic (BME) communities in Plymouth.
Plymouth Family Support Services:  Kinterbury House, Kinterbury Street, St Andrews Cross, Plymouth, PL1 2DG.  Tel:  (01752) 255106   A team of trained, experienced and supported volunteers.  Provide support for families under stress and help develop preventative work within the local community.  Provide a Reception Service supporting those who attend Case Conferences in Plymouth.  Volunteers are involved in:
  • Plymouth family phone-line - an information and listening ear service on (01752) 668686 Monday to Thursday 10.00 am - 12.00 noon
  • befriending parents and young people
  • independent visitor service for young people in care
  • adoption support
  • anti-bullying workshops in schools
  • extensive programme of training days for people who work with children and families
  • undertaking research and developing new initiatives to meet community needs
  • counselling - including anger management; lifestory creative therapy
  • bereavement support in schools - for children experiencing loss

Plymouth Parent PartnershipThis is a comprehensive directory which lists services offering information, education and support for parenting.  
Plymouth Mediation:  18 Harwell Street, Plymouth, PL1 5RY.  Tel: (01752) 312121  Aims to help parents who are splitting up, to talk through and agree arrangements for the children, rather than argue such decisions out in court.; offers families in such circumstances financial advice and support; also offers support to neighbours in dispute.
Plymouth Primary Behaviour Support Team:   Part of the Department for Lifelong Learning, offering a range of services to parents across Plymouth.  The multi-agency team is led by a Senior Educational Psychologist and includes support workers, social workers, teachers and secretarial support.  The team is experienced in working with individual primary children, class groups, schools and families.
PTA Devon:  Offer information, advice and support to parents and schools through newsletters, telephone advice, personal contact, seminars, conferences on issues ranging from improving home/school links, parenting education, bullying in schools, charity registration, etc.
Plymouth Smoking Advice Service:  There is a lot of support and advice available to help you, your partner and your family to give up smoking.  Call the specialist service helpline on (01752) 314040.  The specialist service offers individual and group support sessions at Mount Gould or Derriford Hospitals or at your own home. 
Plymouth Primary Care Trust:  Lists GPs, opticians, dentists and pharmacies in the Authority area, including services provided, opening times, accessibility.
Young Carers The website  for young carers, their families and those who work to support them across the UK.  Also see The Zone website (below) as they now have a service aimed at young carers, enabling them to meet on  a weekly basis.
The Zone (formerly Youth Enquiry Service):  14-16 Union Street, Derrys Cross, Plymouth, PL1 2SR   Tel:  (01752) 206626.  Offers a wide range of free, confidential services for 8 to 25 year olds, including counselling, general support, sexual health, personal development, help with accommodation, etc.  www.thezoneplymouth.co.uk
