Eating out in Plymouth

There is a wealth of restaurants, cafes and fast food outlets in Plymouth.  We need parents to offer feedback on those places that they regard as particularly "family friendly" or those that offer something extra, and invite correspondence on this topic.  We hope to be able to put more information on this page in the near future as information is received from YOU.

FAMILY FRIENDLY PLACES TO EAT OUT IN PLYMOUTH - as recommended by local families:  (Please note - the prices vary widely between these restaurants.)

B-Bar at the Barbican Theatre Castle Street, The Barbican, Plymouth, PL1 2WJ.  Apparently it is under new management, and has been declared a "baby-friendly" space offering nutritious (and not too spicy) Thai noodles in cardboard boxes!  (January 2008)

Bar ZeegCo4 Frankfort Gate, Plymouth, PL1 1QD - recommended by Nikki (who won the £20 voucher for July)

"It's pretty small to get a pushchair into and there is no baby changing facility; however the family-run business is extremely friendly and they do their utmost to accommodate you.  It's best to go there off peak times if you have a pushchair as it can get a bit cramped.  Also all the food is beautiful - homecooked meals and it's the best value by far for decent un-processed food in Plymouth.  You can get a 3 course lunch from about £6.95 and their chocolate torte is to die for!"  (July 2007)

Bella Italia: 33 Derry's Cross, Plymouth, PL1 2SW - recommended by Bridget

"The children loved the tasty children's menu, especially the pizza, made extra special with a helium balloon and an activity pack each."  (July 2007)

Cross Keys Inn: The Square, Cawsand, Cornwall, PL10 1PF - recommended (August 2007)

Dartmoor Union Inn:  Fore Street, Holbeton, Devon, PL8 1NE - recommended (August 2007)

Dingles: Royal Parade, Plymouth, PL1 1DY  - recommended by Tamara

"If we are in town with the kids, we like to have lunch in Dingles restaurant on floor 5.  It is easily accessible, right in the centre of town.  Bright and airy, it has a children's seating area with a microwave and a telly.  I often breastfeed in this area of the restaurant and no-one minds as it is in the family area.  the toilets and baby change are close by, the food is gorgeous - especially the soups and you can either have a hot meal or pic-n-mix lunch box for the children with healthy options.  If you have your hands full of prams and children they will carry your tray to your table for you.  I have always experienced good service and friendly staff." (July 2007)

Holland Inn: Hatt, near Saltash, Cornwall, PL12 6PJ - recommended by Trish (who won the £20 voucher for August)

"Although this is a little dated, the food is freshly cooked and exceptional with good value for money.  Round the corner behind the bar is a children's indoor area which also has adult seating so the children can play whilst you sit, eat and watch.  Although not the most modern place to sit and eat it is enough for fun all round.  They do have baby changing facilities off the play area."  (August 2007)

Miners' Arms:  Hemerdon, Plympton, Plymouth, PL7 5BU - recommended by Trish

"Although the food is a little expensive you do get good quality but most importantly on a dry day the outdoor garden area is fantastic entertainment.  There is a large enclosed lawn area with a scattering of (children from walking stage) play equipment.  The area is spacious and the lawn is kept very short and is lush green which makes it soft for any falls.  Most importantly we were able to sit and comfortably eat our meal and keep our son in sight at all times knowing he was enjoying the independence and freedom." (August 2007)

Monty's Bistro and Cafe:  13 The Barbican, Plymouth, PL1 2LS - recommended

"Give colouring pencils and paper to toddlers."  (August 2007)

Mussel Inn, Down Thomas, near Wembury, PL9 0AQ - recommended

"Friendly and welcoming with good outdoor children's play area and books inside."  (August 2007)

Tanner Brothers Brasserie (Barbican Kitchen), Plymouth Gin, Southside Street, Plymouth, PL1 2LQ - recommended

"Went for early sitting with baby and toddler - very accommodating area and kids' menu."  (August 2007)

Tap and Barrel:  Ashford Crescent, Plymouth, PL3 5AA - recommended by Jo

"We took our son there for a Sunday carvery a couple of weeks ago and it was great.  They have nice comfortable high chairs and didn't mind us plating up a few veggies for Jack (didn't charge for this!).  For the older children there is a nice outside space for them to let off steam." (July 2007)

Thanks to those who send in their recommendations - please continue to do so!
