Change of Lifestyle
by Judy Theobald
"We won't let it alter our
lifestyle a bit",
They both say with steadfast intent,
Announcing, with pleasure, to all of their friends
They're expecting a happy event.
"Small children should not disrupt anyone's life,
Should always be seen and not heard."
And of all the people who listen to this,
Not one of them dares say a word.
In due course, the infant appears on
the scene,
And true, they've not slept for a week,
They can't sit and chat without baby in arms
But who cares, they can't hear themselves speak
Above all of its screams. They haven't been out
As none of mum's clothes seem to fit,
But they're gritting their teeth and telling the world
It's not changed their lifestyle a bit.
Go back in two years, and the house is
all changed,
For gone is the china and glass
Which once graced the sitting room book case and shelves.
Outside in the garden, the grass
Has all disappeared under dollies and prams,
There's wellies and bikes in the hall
And the talk is on potties and nursery schools,
They don't mention lifestyles at all.
A year on, they're all eating jelly
for tea,
Brought forward their bedtime to eight,
Their friends never call as they're in the same boat,
And they can't stay awake until late.
But they've wonderful news, they're soon to be joined
By a new little bundle of bounce,
And at least they can say, with no word of a lie,
It won't change their lifestyle an ounce!
