Eating Out In Plymouth

There is a wealth of restaurants, cafes and fast food outlets in Plymouth. We need parents to offer feedback on those places that they regard as particularly “family friendly” or those that offer something extra, and invite correspondence on this topic. We hope to be able to put information on this page in the near future as information is received from YOU.

Last night we were lucky enough to be invited to a preview night at the new River Cottage Deli ‘Plymouth Canteen‘. LOVE the decor and atmosphere, they have used lots of olds bits of the building in the refurbishment, an old door has been turned into a table in the private dining area and the whole place has a really nice to feel to it.

The food was amazing! I had a warm mushroom and goats cheese salad to start and lamb with celeriac mash for the main. They have a small but fairly cheap kids menu including sausage and chips and cheese on toast which are always a good bet for my two children.

There are lots of lovely River Cottage products that you can buy in the shop area including some River Cottage Nettle ale which my husband enjoyed. The staff were very friendly, welcoming and easy to please. You cannot beat the location, we came out of the restaurant and just stood gazing out at the moonlit water, it was so peaceful, you could have been anywhere in the world. We will definitely go back!

I moved to Plymouth last year and I have to be honest eating out at some places with my boys aged 3 and 6 is often something of a challenge!!
We enjoy going to The Beefeater at Marsh Mills, the boys love their meals £5ish for 2 courses and a drink and they have a slide outside when the weather is good! We also like The Harvester in Plympton – unlimited salad and bread which occupies the little ones til their meals arrive. Again reasonably priced and you always leave full. We also like the Pub just outside of Plympton just off the A38 down a small country lane that offers a carvery every day (the name escapes me sorry) but they have a small out door play area and my boys like going there.
A bit further out in Callington The Holland Inn is a fab pub – a firm favourite of ours, it is superb – it has an indoor play area, a great sunday carvery and they have fab kids meals and we love it!! – Editor’s note – sadly the Holland Inn has closed down.

Montys cafe (13 The Barbican, Plymouth, PL1 2LS) is a fab place to eat with the kids. They do very nice breakfast and a wide range for lunch. They cater well for children, although there is a good mixture of people there so you don’t feel like you are in a creche! They are also licensed in case you feel the urge for a nice glass of wine – we have had some very leisurely lunches there with our children, aged 5 and 8.

Just a few of our good experiences, with clean high chairs and some with decent baby changing areas. I have to agree that Montys Cafe, 13 The barbican is fabulous and has a changing table, and several high chairs. Also Long Ash Garden Centre cafe (Buckland Monachorum) is lovely and has decent changing table, and a couple high chairs, And some children’s toys available.
Seco Lounge Royal William Yard, was great for children’s toys puzzles, don’t know about a changing table tho. Nice clean changing table and room in Tavistock Market which we use if we eat at Dukes, Pannier Market, which is lovely, and have a couple of booster chairs. Or Liaisons, 3 Church Lane, Tavistock which have nice high chairs, but no changing area.
Positano (Mayflower Street) was lovely, food superb ,lovely atmostphere and great with children, no changing area though.

I have two children aged 2 and 5 and I love eating out at Pizza Hut (preferably Coxside). It is such a child friendly place. Shame they have finished the children eat free offer though!

I also enjoy eating out at the Beefeater – their childrens meal deal is excellent value and we feel comfortable eating with the children.

We went to Morrisons (Plymstock) last night and it cost £8.50 for two curries with nann bread, 2 medium cokes, 2 childrens meals, 2 childrens drinks, 2 freddo chocolate bars and 2 rocket ice lollies!! Such a great deal – children eat free weekdays (term time) after 4pm.
