Plymouth College of Art

The Arts Club caters for students aged between 9 and 18 which is broken down into two age categories. During the course of the year participants will take part in a programmed range of activities appropriate to their age group, utilizing the specialist resources that Art College has to offer. These activities include; photography, textiles, graphic design, multimedia, small metal design, ceramics, digital photography,moving image, printing, drawing and painting.

Is a scheme run through Plymouth City Library services which aims to encourage parents and carers to share books with their very young children. Follow the link for further information.
Booktouch packs are available for children aged 0 to 4 years with visual impairments. Bookshine packs are available for children aged 0 to 4 years with hearing impairments. Please ask at your local library for more information.

Plymouth Children’s Book Group

One of many groups around the country which make up the Federation of Children’s Book Groups. It is for anyone interested in finding out more about good children’s books. They meet for talks and discussions, hold regular story times and occasionally arrange children’s activities and author/book events.

Most traditional music teachers like to wait until a child is 5 or 6 years old or can read, although some may be willing to teach a younger child who is musically gifted. Names of local music teachers can be obtained from Yellow Pages and the Plymouth Music and Drama Library.

Music Makers

Music and dance classes for children aged 12 months to 5 years at Plymouth, Saltash, Callington and Ermington. A fun way to introduce children to traditional and cultural music with creative movement and exercise incorporating a wide range of colourful and educational props.

Plymouth Musical Activities Club

Plymouth Musical Activities Club (PMAC) is a music group for young people between the ages of 9 and 18.

We teach young people of all musical abilities. We meet weekly and provide lessons in flute, keyboards, drums, singing, clarinet, electrics and guitars. We perform live at a variety of venues on a regular basis. We also provide social activities such as residential, bowling, Quiz Nights and Talent Evenings.

Offer drumming and percussion workshops, and specialist rock and jazz sessions. Also holiday activities, including short break sessions for children with disabilities.

Plymouth Youth Music Service

Has established a youth concert band for young musicians. The band meets one evening a week in term time and is directed by Barrie Mills, Music Tuition Coordinator for the Music Service and former Director of the Plymouth Royal Marines Band. Players of any wind band instrument of grade 3 standard or above are welcome. There are also the following ensembles:
Plymouth Beginners and Intermediate Youth Orchestras, Plymouth Youth Guitar Ensemble, Plymouth Soundhouse Youth Brass Band and the Plymouth Junior Steel Band.

Pride Renegades Cheerleading Team

We are a competitive cheerleading club, open to all aged 10+ (we also take 9 year olds who will be 10yrs by 31st August 2014) with no upper age limit. Our training sessions are on Wednesdays 7-9:30pm at the Life Centre. Training consists of cardio, strength and flexibility plus stunting, gymnastic tumbling, jumping and dance and we aim to keep sessions as safe and fun as possible. All members go on to compete nationally should they wish to do so. £2 per session.

South West Music School

We are a music charity working with talented young instrumentalists, singers and composers aged 8-18yrs in the South West.
Due to the geographical nature of the South West we are not building based but are a ‘virtual’ school working with young people on an individual basis in their local area.
Performing musicians can audition to join South West Music School from age 8-16yrs and can stay on the programme until they are 18yrs old. Applications usually open in late January with a deadline in May and auditions in June. Successful students will spend the first year on the Feeder Scheme and then re-audition annually the following June to earn a place on the Core Programme.

Street Factory Studios

Street Factory Studios run weekly sessions in Hip Hop for all the family, we teach all styles of Hip Hop/Break Dance/Body Poppin/Street! We run daily classes for children 4yrs upwards, and adult classes. We run Youth Nights, Pioneer training, Dance Crews, Competitions and Family Events!

Tatty Bumpkin

Fun multi-sensory classes loosely based on yoga, including movements, story-telling, music and relaxation. Baby Bumpkin I for babies from 7 weeks to crawling; Baby Bumpkin II for toddlers.

Wheel Fever Projects

Paula Hocking Community Dance Leader leads a fun and relaxed workshop to introduce skills and build confidence. Crossing Tracks is Wheelfever Projects’ contemporary dance company of disabled and non-disabled dancers, between 12-25 year olds. Meet at Plymouth Life Centre.

Blue Sound Project

Blue Sound is an exciting project in Plymouth working to connect more people with the marine environment. It is funded by Natural England as part of its £28.75 million Access to Nature programme, funded through the Big Lottery Fund’s Changing Spaces programme. Blue Sound is a partnership project of the Marine Biological Association, with key partner CoastNet and many others across Plymouth. The project is led by a community action group made up of people of all ages, abilities and back grounds and activities so far have included snorkelling, beach cleans, arty days, wild food foraging, rock pooling and fishing. The action group have also produced a Snorkel Safari Guide to the Plymouth Sound and Estuaries European Marine Site. Devon Wildlife Trust

Follow the link to find out where there are Junior branches of the Devon Wildlife Trust. Members receive a national magazine four times a year and an annual local newsletter. The local groups are involved in environmental activities and some practical conservation work. For children from 7 years to teenage.

National Marine Aquarium

We have several exciting areas throughout the Aquarium, designed specifically, let them create something to take home in our Discovery Zone or explore the cavern of colour in the Coral Seas or see Sharks in the Mermaids Cave. We also have a Soft Play area. Better still all children under five go free. If you have very small children, the Aquarium is fully accessible for pushchairs with most exhibits served by ramps and lifts where there are stairs. Nursing Mothers are welcome throughout the building; however, should you require privacy, please speak to one of our hosts who can arrange for this.

Rockpool Rambles

Organised by the Devon Wildlife Trust at Wembury Marine Centre, on Wembury Beach, near Plymouth. They last approx 1 hour 30 minutes. Please wear suitable footwear for walking on slippery, seaweed covered rocks.

Our classes are open to babies from birth, as soon as you feel you would like to get out with your baby and enjoy some music together while learning how to really make the most of early communication. Les Petits Mousses de Plymouth

“Les Petits Mousses de Plymouth” is a support playgroup for families who speak French at home. It aims to give the children and parents the opportunity to socialise with other French-speaking families.

Plymouth Multilingual Families

We are a unique organisation, offering friendship and support to families bringing up their children to speak more than one lanaguage. We meet monthly. children can play and enjoy craft activities, while parents chat in a relaxed atmosphere. We offer a healthy snack for all. Families can either join our association or drop by on an occasional basis. Everyone is welcome!

Plymouth Baby Lab

The University of Plymouth child-friendly research lab is located on the main campus of the University (facing Drake Circus). All through the year, our CRB-checked team welcomes babies, toddlers and pre-school aged children to take part in a fun activity! Your visit lasts around 40 min, including tea or coffee, a chat, and one or several short child-friendly activities with your child. As a thank you, we pay £4 to cover your travel expenses, or we offer your child a lovely Babylab mug, t-shirt or cap, plus a balloon and a Child Scientist certificate.
Research with families who volunteer their time in a Babylab (as in London, Oxford, Newcastle) is the only way for knowledge on child development to progress. Help us help children! Thanks to child research, many developmental issues (autism, Downs syndrome, language delays, etc) are now much better understood.     We advertise the information on behalf of the organisations promoting the activities we do not run them ourselves.
