Free indoor alternatives for a rainy day in Plymouth include The Box, the city’s museum and gallery venue, and Central Library on Armada Way. Plymouth City Council lists both as free places to visit or use. Choose between exploring collections and spending time with books, then check the opening hours and any activity booking requirements before setting off.[1][2][3][4]

Monday is the clearest difference: Central Library opens at 9am, while The Box’s published visiting days begin on Tuesday. On Sunday, The Box is the available option of these two. During the working week, the library also opens an hour earlier and closes an hour later than the museum.[1][3]

Choose The Box for Collections and a Packed-Lunch Stop

You don’t need to fill an entire day. The Box suggests allowing an hour to explore one gallery or exhibition in detail, or two hours for two or three spaces. With children, choosing a single gallery gives you a manageable starting point and leaves room to stay longer if something catches their attention.[2]

For a visit with a Plymouth connection, try Port of Plymouth, which explores the city and the sea, or 100 Journeys, about voyages that began here. The suspended display of 14 ship’s figureheads offers another specific focus. You could invite each child to choose a figurehead and describe what they notice, making your own looking activity around the collection.[2]

Bringing lunch is permitted. The designated indoor picnic space is on the large steps between the main entrance and shop, which is worth knowing if your family needs a particular seating arrangement. Food and drink must stay outside the galleries. Toilets are available on each floor, with baby changing and a Changing Places facility on the ground floor. Lockers cost £1 each, so using one adds a small optional expense to a free visit.[2]

General entry is free, but check separately if a particular exhibition is the reason for your trip. The Box’s own visitor page says that current and upcoming exhibitions require advance booking. A spontaneous general visit and a visit built around an exhibition need different preparation.[1][2]

Choose Central Library for a Book-Focused Outing

At Central Library, make choosing books together the outing’s main purpose. The branch lists books and audiobooks for loan, public computers and free WiFi. Its weekday opening window gives you more flexibility than The Box if you’re fitting a visit around other plans.[1][3]

The practical facilities include a lift and toilets, including an accessible toilet. Keep paid extras separate from the free library visit: the branch also lists printing, scanning, photocopying and meeting-room hire, and warns that some services carry charges. You can leave those extras out of your plan.[1][3]

Find a Library Activity for Your Actual Visit

Plymouth City Council’s library activities directory lists Lego, Rhymetime, Storytime and Tall tales under children and family activities. These are categories across the library network. They don’t establish which activity will run at Central Library on the day you visit.[4]

Start with the directory’s Central Library location link if that’s your chosen destination, or browse a category if the activity matters more than the branch. Read the individual listing for its date, time, intended participants, any cost and booking requirements. The council specifically asks visitors to check booking requirements before going.[4]

Build your rainy-day plan around the building’s ordinary offer, then add a session when its listing fits. Before leaving, check Central Library’s branch page or The Box’s visitor page again, especially if you’re travelling for a particular exhibition or activity.[2][3][4]
